Challenge # 21 - Childhood

Wow, SnapSluts is now 21... Let's get it plastered! Oh, wait, no -- it's just the number of challenges, not years. Still, it made me think of the significance of turning 21 and reflect that many people in the U.S. mark this occasion as the last step before adulthood. Heck, in Washington, DC it's even the age of majority! (according to Wikipedia, anyway)

So, as our blog grows up before our eyes, I say this challenge is to capture "childhood".

For Bonus Points: Include primary colors!

Reminder: Just like on "Whose Line Is It Anyway?", the points don't matter!

Caveat: The challenge is not children. That would be weird.

Anyway! Paul, please choose our next topic as we gaze admiringly at your winning photos...

*Sigh of admiration*

The Wrong Help or Help Too Late

I'm annoyed by the fact that every sale or special offer these days is a "bailout" or "stimulus". Sure, there are serious repercussions to the current state of our economy but really? Like this example of absurdity next to some very serious commuters:

On the other hand, this is combination of serious things that seem absurd in their proximity:

All my other attempts are on flickr, as usual.

Challenge #20 -- Recession

Well that was cool. Glad you guys liked the mystical powers of the world-class DJ. With that said, it's time for another contest idea. I figured since we're all feeling the effects of an ass economy, challenge #20 should be "recession."

So there it is...capture whatever you think speaks "recession" to you and your lens.

The Power to Move You

This individual by the name of Ferry Corsten has the uncanny ability to take an entire nightclub on a musical journey...

He can also sprout multiple appendages to help his mix-master skills...

Giant-Man + Absorbing Man and Krypto the Superdog

I wish it were not so cold out so that I could have spent more time building up the candidates for this challenge. Still, I got a couple of shots, the first from an idea suggested by my girlfriend.

I first touched some metal to absorb its properties and then I grew to fifty feet tall. But that's a hard thing to convey without some contrasting items nearby for scale. Fortunately, an asian woman was nearby and I was able to pick her up and hold her in my hand for the first photo:

Then later on, I encountered the last dog of Krypton, Krypto, as it was dashing around this field near where I lived. Although that dog was definitely exhibiting some super speed, it was hard for me to capture with my new camera, until I managed to snag this fun shot:

All my other attempts, mostly of the superdog, are on flickr, as usual.

Love is ...

There are so many things I started to write about this photo, and about love, but deleted them all. So, I'll just let the photo stand alone.

He loves me, he loves me not?

I found this finger-painted on a flower box while walking outside.  Which sort of led to this idea...

Perhaps not too original, but I got a little camera happy with my plant...

Young Love, Loving Memorial

I wandered around Silver Spring this weekend, specifically thinking about this challenge. I tried a couple of candids and I tried asking some folks if I could take their pictures. I liked the candids the best.

My favorite, though perhaps a bit obvious, was this candid of a young couple in the distance.

I was using my new camera and my memory card hadn't arrived yet or I'd have taking more photos of my second subject, with which I almost collided as I was walking around looking for people.

All my other (not many) attempts are on flickr, as usual.

Challenge #18 - Love

Guys, did you see that??? Sandy said she loves me!!!! *swoon* (...or was it Ann? Oh, my heart is torn.)

So, in honor of Sandy's (or Ann's) profession of love for me, I say we all take pictures of love.

Though, Bobby did suggest that I choose the challenge subject of "mass-production and over-marketing of a Halmark-Holiday." ... Somehow that just didn't have the same ring to it as "love" ...

See you back here on Monday the 9th.

The winner of #17 - Shadows is...

...Kate! And it's an upset! When I checked last night around 5pm someone else was winning, and then BOOM, this morning, Kate was on top with almost half the votes! It's like a second superbowl, people. (If only I could make the polling results into a highlights video the I could post YouTube.)

Also, common people, don't you want to upset her winning streak?! She's like Ken Jennings on Jeopardy. Let's all make a concerted effort to keep Kate from winning challenge #18. (Luv ya Kate!)

So, Kate, what have you got for us this time?

Challenge # 17 - Shadows VOTE!!

'Cause I'm Slim Shady, yes I'm the real Shady
All you other Slim Shadys are just imitating
So won't the real Slim Shady please stand up,
please stand up, please stand up?

Or something. Please vote.

From the Shadows and Of the Shadows

I love shadows.

My first submission is from the shadows, a picture taken of shaded things.

And my second is of the shadows, a picture taken at a convenient wall.

Instead of linking to the original size photos, this time I linked them to the metadata pages on flickr. You can click through to the main page and see the larger sizes that way. Just thought I'd try something different.

Whee, I'm back in the game! (for better or worse) Going back to my usual pattern, here's the link to all the other photos I took for this challenge: flickr

This wasn't originally intended as a submission, I just came up with a fun way to present Rachel with her birthday present: I set up a room divider as a backdrop and suspended a fairly bright LED flashlight above it to serve as the spotlight. The LED light and the long exposure made the photos a bit grainy, a problem I tried to counteract by messing with the contrast and saturation a bit.

Birds of a feather

Subject is a mobile (of hand-carved wooden birds) that I have hanging in our hallway skylight.

I couldn't decide between the two of these. I love the shading and how striking the first one is in the sense of depth it holds ...

but I love the concept of the second one ... with the single "real" bird and the five shadows behind.

So I submitted both. :)

Challenge 16 - Shadows

The look of a shadow depends in what light you see it... A positive light (to the left of subject) and a negative light (to the right of subject) were used to get this shot... ...
