Challenge #13 - Shades of Red and Green

Every year in my hometown there is a photo contest at the agricultural fair - and one of the categories is almost always a "Shades of" theme. So in light of the holiday season, this week's theme is going to be Shades of Red and Green.

Submit 1 or 2 photos where the dominant colour is either red or green or both! If you choose to submit 2 photos, you can even do a mini-series!

Exciting? Yes.

So get to it! I want to see a lot of entries this week!

I went to my very first basketball game, and as I was taking pictures (without a flash but with an orange sensor light) this kid saw me.  Click on the photo to view the long version.

Challenge # 10 - High Tech VOTE!

Hi all,

Awesome submissions this week! (As with most weeks, but just wanted you guys to know it is for sure awesome!) I have a feeling it'll be a close race! Make sure you comment if/when you can!

Connected

Some people find it strangely small, but I really like my little cell phone.  I took this self-portrait in total darkness, right after having opened up my phone (before the displays dimmed); no post touch-ups or adjustments.  Even with my tripod I had to hold my breath and shoot quite a few before I got one that wasn't blurry.

High Tech Sound

Okay, so I feel like all I ever get to shoot these days are DJs in clubs. But nothing says high tech to me like the equipment they work on each night. Mixing beats and twisting sound to move a club full of people is definitely an art-form. And you have to have some pretty spiffy gear to make it all work. =)

The above photo is of George Acosta at Ultra Bar in DC this past Friday night. He's regarded as one of the top trance DJs in the world and hails from Miami. I had the honor of shooting photos for him once before in front of a crowd of 45,000 at the Winter Music Conference. I shot this photo with my D80. Settings were 1/8, F4 using my SB-600.

Used to be high tech ...

Back in 1901, this was *very* high tech. ... My father owns one (that still works!), so I took some pictures while I was down in Atlanta for Thanksgiving.

(For the record, this was my runner up photo, which is much more "high tech" in the traditional/literal sense.)

Self Portraits in a Mirror

Hi!

This is my first week entering a photo. I'm so excited!!!

Here 'tis:

The concept was inspired by Isle Bing's Self Portrait in Mirrors (1931), which can be seen here: http://collectionsonline.lacma.org/mwebcgi/mweb.exe?request=record;id=109753;type=101

It's a High Tech vs. Old School camera showdown...

Hi all, this week was super stripey! I have a feeling it'll be a close race. Thanks for all your suggestions; keep 'em comin'! We're considering them all carefully and discussing how it will affect the blog/activity and we'll let you know if the format changes!

Candy Stripes

now I can eat them... I hope they are good ;-)

Kate's Stripes

So, here goes. My first post on SnapSluts. Ta da!

This was in the studio in Providence where Bobby and I taught this weekend. I think I confused a lot of people as to why I was standing in the middle of the room taking pictures of the ceiling.

And here's my second photo. Stairs in our house. There were just too many lines/stripes. I just couldn't resist.

Challenge # 9 - Stripes

That's right folks, it's time for us to face the fact that we're all creative people, which means we love stripes. Don't even try to deny it. We buy them and paint them and wear them and see them where none really exist. In fact, doesn't this text that you're reading look suspiciously stripey?

Deadline: next stripey Monday, 11/17 (yeah, we missed the stripiest day of the month 11/11, oh well)

And the trophy for best triptych goes to...

...Limequat! Congrats and bravo (x3)!

Here is the winning combination (I am SO going to appreaciate this when searching through the archives one day):

Challenge # 7 - Faceless Portrait VOTE!

Obviously there's one type of vote that's more important than the other, but hopefully you have time to vote on SnapSluts too! Maybe if you have wi-fi while waiting in line. Please remember to give feedback on others' photos if you can!

Good luck!

There were an estimated 80 - 100,000 people at the Barack Obama rally last night in Manassas. In spite of the tricky lighting conditions (and the fact that I don't have an SLR camera), I got a couple of pretty good candid shots.

Make sure to vote twice today; only one of those times should be for SnapSluts!

State of Trance

This image comes to you from Club Ibiza in DC. I believe they capture a faceless portrait of an international trance DJ. I absolutely love this type of photography because it challenges my ability to hold my camera steady in low light without over-exposing with the use of a flash. It's a total guessing game on the settings, but once you find the sweet spot and time your shot based on the lighting, it provides some of the most striking images. Then again, I'm a trance music addict.

Here's one more...

Challenge # 6 - Cold snap VOTE!!

First of all, what the hell, people. I love you all dearly, but more people need to post. *stern face* I mean really. What am I going to do at work if there are only 4 or 5 posts each time? I might have to like... be productive or something. (Ew.) I know I didn't post either, and I'm stapling my hand to my camera right now. (KACHUNK! Gush, spurt, faint)

That being said, awesome submissions this past week! Vote for your favorites, and please try to comment on photos!

I didn't take this photo specifically for the challenge, but I think it fits anyway.

Falling like flies...

Hi everyone,
I guess I’ll "break the ice" this week!
With cold times coming, it makes life difficult for small insects. Yesterday, I found a dead fly by my window :-(

Some of you, looking at these pictures, could think that I own a crazy powerful macro lens. Well, not exactly. I just used a technique I found on the internet.

For the rest of my fly pictures, see my picasa website.

Challenge # 6 - Cold snap

Our first challenge that's a play on our name!

It's been getting colder, and I know it snowed this morning where some of you live, so let's make the glass half full by celebrating (or at least photographing) the coming of cooler weather.

Deadline: Monday Oct 27, midnight

Bonus points/restrictions: none (Woohoo, crazy freedom! I'm gonna go get tattooed right NOW!!)

The winner of Challenge # 5 - Food is...

Steve Losh! Woohoo! Violence is really the answer.

He won with 36% of the vote! It was a close race, folks! Keep submitting these awesome photos.

Heavenly rice

Especially the grains stuck to the lid. Sticky-tastic.

I'm definitely not a food photographer...

This unlucky apple was the outlet for my frustration at not being able to come up with something for this.
